Using the service and SMS search
How does the SMS service work in practice? This section answers the most common questions about using the directory service, its speed and its reliability.
How does number search by SMS work?
Type a person's or company's name, or a phone number, in a text message and send it to 16500. You'll get the subscriber's contact details in reply – name, phone number and address – depending on whether the details are publicly available.
If there are several matches, text L to 16500 to get the next ones. The reply shows how many results were found and which one you're viewing (e.g. 1/5).
The service uses official sources and works quickly without internet access or apps. It's handy whenever you need contact details quickly and reliably.
Can I use the service without registering?
Yes. The 16500.fi SMS services don't require registration, identification or installing an app. Just text the name or number you're looking for to 16500.
This makes the service quick and effortless even for occasional use – e.g. when you quickly need a single contact or you're out of internet range.
How quickly will I get a reply?
The reply arrives almost instantly, usually within seconds of sending your message. The result is sent straight to your phone by SMS.
The 16500.fi directory service is designed for situations where you need information right away: identifying an unknown caller, getting a company's phone number or finding a private person's contact details.
Does the service work for unlisted numbers?
No. If the phone number or person's details are unlisted, they can't be shown in the results. You'll get a message saying the information isn't available.
This applies especially to private persons who have banned the disclosure of their details to public search services.
Can a number search fail?
Yes, in some cases a number search doesn't return a result. The most common reasons are typos (e.g. extra characters in the number or name), an unlisted number, or missing data in the sources.
Make sure you type the name or number correctly – e.g. without spaces or extra characters – and try again if needed. The service always tells you clearly if the search can't be completed.
