What is the vehicle register?
The Transport register, formerly known as the vehicle register, is a national register maintained by the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom. It contains details of all vehicles registered in Finland and their owners or holders.
Traficom's licensed partners, such as Suomen 16100 Oy, which provides the 16500 service, offer vehicle register data as a paid search service.
What car details can I get by plate number?
Basic register details include the car owner's and holder's name, vehicle category, make and model, year of first use, power source, inspection and tax details, and any restriction entries.
Vehicle history includes previous owners, the number of ownership changes, and inspection and odometer history. Full register details include everything stored in Traficom's vehicle register.
Can Traficom's vehicle details be restricted?
In some cases, a car owner can ban the disclosure of their details through Traficom's e-services. Search services then won't show the owner's details, or disclosure is restricted, e.g. for marketing purposes.
However, restricting the details doesn't prevent all requests, such as searches by the authorities.
Which car details are free, and which require a paid service?
Traficom's e-services provide a car's basic details for free. More extensive details, as well as history and owner details, always require a paid service.
License plate search is a quick way to check a vehicle's details, whether it's your own car or any other vehicle. It works without apps or signing in: just text the plate number to 16500.
